Freedom Motors Successfully Demonstrates Rotary Engine
With Exceptionally Low Emission Levels

Freedom Motors has taken its rotary engine to new heights and new lows by demonstrating that it is capable of operating at exceptionally low emission levels that interests government and industry officials.

Davis, CA October 26, 1998Freedom Motors, the rotary engine development and manufacturing company based here, announced today that it has successfully demonstrated exceptionally low emission levels its rotary engine to members of the California Air Resources Board (CARB) and Bluewater Network at the company’s facilities here.

The purpose of this visit, according to Tom Fletcher, General Manager of Freedom Motors, was to demonstrate Freedom Motors on the company’s dynamometer facility where the engine’s emissions are measured by standard industry equipment. During the test observed by officials of both organizations attending, emission levels of the engine under test and operated at power and RPM levels prescribed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), were significantly below the Federal and California State’s projected levels beyond the year 2008.

The company provided the chart below for comparison of combined hydrocarbon (HC) and nitrous oxides (NOX) emissions that a marine engine may produce measured in grams per kilowatt-hour:

Year EPA CARB

2001 204 46

2004 130 37

2006 81 17 (enforced in 2008)

Emissions from today’s engines in grams per kilowatt-hour.

Two-stroke engine (carbureted) greater than 300

Two-stroke engine (direct fuel injected) greater than 30

Four stroke piston engine greater than 15

Freedom Motor Rotapower Engine less than 3

CARB has developed a labeling system that will apply to all marine vessels, with a ranking of an engine’s environmental emission qualifications indicated by a series of labels.

The various colored labels, which will be applied on the outside of all personal watercraft (PWC), will show certification by CARB of emission levels of that particular product. This labeling will enable local and regional agencies to ban personal watercraft that have emissions greater than acceptable amounts. This, in turn, will provide the means by which consumers can select the product that meets the requirements of their favorite recreational areas. Lake Tahoe, for example, has banned all PWC not meeting the level of emissions represented by the Rotapower engine

and other four stroke engines, beginning in 1999. This trend is expected to spread to other water districts.

Because of California’s leadership in emission restrictions, it is expected by most authorities in air and water emissions, that other states in the U.S. will subsequently examine and follow the lead provided by California.

Freedom Motors is a manufacturer of rotary engines designed for various recreational, industrial and transportation applications including personal watercraft, snowmobiles, portable generators and pumps. The environmentally clean rotary eliminates over 98% of the total emissions of piston engines; as fuel efficient as the best four-stroke piston engine; compact (10 HP model fits in the palm of your hand and 160 HP fits in a hand bucket); low cost, low vibration, low noise and capable of using multiple fuels including natural gas, diesel, alcohol and gasoline.
